New: Dalmore “Sirius” (@£10,000/bottle!)

John Hansell

Here’s another ultra-expensive, ultra-rare whisky coming on the market. Let’s see, the list is growing: Gold Bowmore, Glenfiddich 50 year old, Dalmore 50 year old, The Macallan Lalique 57 year old, Highland Park 1964, Highland Park 50 year old (coming next year). Amy I missing any?

The press release is below. Yes, I’m getting a review sample. (I know it’s my job, but I’m actually beginning to feel guilty.) Older Dalmores have the ability to be outstanding. I’ll let you know how this one turned out.

Dalmore1951Decanter-LOWDalmore Releases £10,000 Malt Whisky

05/10/09: Glasgow, UK: A rare 1951-vintage single malt whisky with a RSP of £10,000 per bottle will be released today (Monday 5 October).

Only 12 decanters of the Sirius expression from premium whisky brand The Dalmore will be produced. Sirius will only be available to private buyers and through a limited network of World Duty Free (WDF) stores.

“The international market for high-end luxury products which have an investment value is buoyant – and the finest whiskies are playing an increasingly dominant role in this sector,” says The Dalmore’s Brand Director, David Robertson.

“Our partnership with World Duty Free allows us to reach an elite group of investors and whisky aficionados across the globe. We will be focusing on key target markets in Taiwan, USA and France.”

Sirius will be launched in the flagship WDF store at Heathrow Terminal 5. Nigel Sandals, Category Buying Manager for Liquor at WDF, adds: “Our customer base contains some of the most knowledgeable investors in spirits in the world.

“Being able to offer the absolute best-quality luxury goods is a very strong incentive for buyers to use travel retail and World Duty Free – as they would a specialist retailer – to get exceptional value and to see a real return on their investment.”

The Dalmore’s 1951 Sirius Vintage is a single-cask, single malt whisky, with a cask strength of 45%.

The Dalmore Master Distiller, Richard Paterson, says: “Distinguished and elegant, age has gracefully finessed this brilliant expression. Sirius is, quite simply, one of the world’s most perfect whiskies.”

Macallan formally introduces 1824 Collection

John Hansell

I reviewed this new line of Travel Retail whiskies here back in February. This morning I received the official press release announcing them. Here’s the guts of the press release. Very nice whiskies, by the way.

All our experience, distilled into one collection

The Macallan 1824 Collection is a new family of single malts from The Macallan. Developed exclusively for the brand’s third largest market – Global Travel Retail -where it has been the fastest growing major Single Malt in the last five years and is currently ranked number two by volume.

The Collection is available in all key Travel Retail outlets in the Americas and Europe and has just been launched in Asia at Singapore airport. The Select Oak expression has secured listings onboard a number of airlines including Air Canada, Delta, American Airlines and Continental.

The 1824 Collection of four expressions – Select Oak, Whisky Maker’s Edition, Estate Reserve and 1824 Limited Release – offers the ultimate flavour journey for whisky lovers. Recommended retail prices range from 46 to 1,450 euros.

The 1824 Collection has been created by John Ramsay, Master Whisky Maker for parent company The Edrington Group, and Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan’s Whisky Maker; who between them have over 50 years of experience of making whisky. They have been inspired by the distillery’s long history and rich traditions to create a very special range of Single Malts, selecting the best casks at the peak of their maturity in order to achieve the fullest and most complex whisky.

Each expression illustrates a particular story about The Macallan’s long and distinguished history and showcases the spectrum of flavours and aromas associated with The Macallan, the world’s most iconic whisky.

William Ovens, The Edrington Group’s Area Director, Global Travel Retail, comments: “The Macallan has enjoyed the most dynamic growth of any Single Malt in Travel Retail in recent years. In this period we have experienced significant success with some very innovative new products.  The 1824 Collection opens a new chapter in the illustrious history of The Macallan and we are confident that consumers will react positively to this exclusive and eye catching new range.

“The four expressions in the Collection have been positively embraced by whisky experts and connoisseurs. In fact the Collection is the highest scoring new product range ever released by The Macallan. Whisky Expert and author of The Whisky Bible, Jim Murray has given Select Oak a score of 94.5% and the 1824 Limited Release Decanter a score of 97.5%, describing it as ‘a lifetime great whisky’.”

The range is on shelf now with the 1824 Limited Release decanter on sale from October 2009.

Review: Glenmorangie Sonnalta

John Hansell

Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, 46%, $70
The first of Glenmorangie’s new “Private Collection” line of whisky for Travel Retail. This one is finished in Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry. With PX being so rich and intense and Glenmorangie spirit is so subtly complex and delicate, does the sherry dominate here? No, it doesn’t. Still, this is viscous and very textural for a Glenmorangie. I’m picking up rhum agricole drenched with honeyed apricot, toffee almond, chocolate covered raisin, glazed citrus, and cherry pits, all leading to a leathery, tobacco tinged, finish. A visceral whisky with plenty of grip. Great for after dinner.

Advanced Malt Advocate magazine rating: 90

P.S. I’m waiting to get confirmation on the price. My press release didn’t specify, but I have been seeing it listed as this price from various sources.

Highland Park 21 y/o: buy now!

John Hansell

I first wrote about Highland Park 21 year old here back in December, 2007. I commented how this new whisky, exclusive to Travel Retail, is one of the finest Highland Parks I have ever tasted. The whisky was smartly bottled at 47.5% ABV.

This past week I received a letter from Highland Park’s Global Controller that the whisky’s strength will be dropped to 40% ABV.

First, let me commend Highland Park for taking the high road on this and letting the whisky media know about this ahead of time, rather than us finding about it after the fact. It was very professional of them to handle it this way. But still, I can’t help but be sad about this decision. Here’s the explanation I received in the letter:

We intend to keep the same selection of cask types for the 21 year old and, as with all expressions of Highland Park, the colour will remain entirely natural. However, in order to  protect the character of this variant, a reduction in overall strength will be required; this reflects the relatively lower cask strengths of the whiskies coming from the mid–to late–1980s, the key constituent components for this expression. As a result, the ABV will be reduced from 47.5% to 40%.

So, if you are traveling internationally in the near future, or know someone who is, now is the time to stock up on HP 21 before the strength is dropped.

The letter goes on to say something even more concerning to me:

It is worth pointing out that we are currently looking at the strengths of both Highland Park 25 year old and 30 year old for the same reasons and expect that their strengths may need to  change too.

As you may know, these expressions are also bottled at higher strengths. I fear that lowering these strengths to 40% ABV will also be a detriment to the whisky. Don’t rush out and stock up on 25 and 30 year old HPs (just yet anyway), but I will keep you abreast of any changes to these expressions before they occur.

The Balvenie “Golden Cask” vs. “17 yr. Rum Cask”

John Hansell

The Balvenie Golden Cask, 14 year old, 47.5%, $62/L
Gold color (as its name suggests), with a hint of copper. This whisky, which was finished in Caribbean rum casks, follows on the heels of the limited edition The Balvenie 17 yr. old Rum Cask. The 17 yr. old was pleasant enough, but quite sweet (I rated it an 80). This new Golden Cask is an improvement, because the higher alcohol level along with an array of dried spice helps to balance the sweet rum notes. Lively, bright tangerine, nectarine and pineapple combine with Balvenie’s signature honey, nougat, Heath Bar, light molasses and milk chocolate. Dried spice (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg) and gritty oak resin kick in on the finish, rounding everything out quite nicely. Now if we could only have the best of both worlds—the balance of the Golden cask 14 yr. old, and the maturity of the 17 yr. old. That could be a whisky worthy of a 90s rating. (Exclusive to Travel Retail.)

Review: The Macallan 1824 Collection

John Hansell

I have a lot of new reviews in the queue. It’s been a while since I posted a review, so here are four!

Focus on The Macallan 1824 Collection
This is a new line of whiskies exclusively for Travel Retail, ranging from $60-$1,900. None of them have age statements. They are currently slated to debut in April, 2009, with the exception of the 1824 Limited Release decanter, which will debut in October, 2009. Prices were converted From Euros to Dollars at the current exchange rate of 1.3. These are advanced Malt Advocate magazine ratings, which will appear in the next issue.

85 The Macallan Select Oak, 40%, $60/1L
Straw gold. Well rounded, with fresh vanilla, berries in cream, caramel custard, toasted oak, and gentle dried spice. A really nice every day, anytime dram. The best price/quality ratio of the range.

83 The Macallan Whisky Maker’s Edition, 42.8%, $90/1L
Full gold. Oily in texture, with ripe barley, front-loaded toffee, honey drenched citrus, fallen orchard fruit, and a full complement of spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). Gripping, resinous, slightly hot finish. The flavors don’t meld together here as well as the other three expressions, but it’s still a fun ride.

95 The Macallan Estate Reserve, 45.7%, $215
Amber color. Richly textured (great mouthfeel), with vanilla fudge, nougat, ripe citrus, and ginger cake, leading to a complex, spicy finish. Great depth on this one. And polished. My pick of the lot.

94 The Macallan 1824 Limited Release, 48%, $1,900
Antique amber. The darkest and most decadent of the four. Quite viscous and soothing, with well-layered notes of apple pie, marmalade, and maple syrup balanced by dried fruits, ginger, polished leather, tobacco and resinous oak. One to sip and savor very slowly. (This whisky is much better than the last ultra-premium release, the Macallan 55 year old in the Lalique Decanter, and thousands of dollars less.)

The Macallan introduces range for Travel Retail

John Hansell

The Macallan will be introducing to Travel Retail four new whiskies under “The Macallan 1824 Collection” title. They are describe, in detail, in the press release I received.

None of the whiskies have age statements. And there’s a very wide range in price. (Prices are in Euros. To convert to dollars, multiply by 1.25.)

I’ve posted the pertinent parts of the press release below. I have samples of all four whiskies and will let you know my thoughts in a future blog posting.

The Macallan launches new range of Single Malts in Global Travel Retail

The Macallan and Maxxium Global Travel Retail are launching The Macallan 1824 Collection at this year’s TFWA world exhibition in Cannes. The range is exclusive to Travel Retail, where the brand has been the fastest growing major Single Malt in the last five years and is number two in volume.

The 1824 Collection of four variants – Select Oak, Whisky Maker’s Edition, Estate Reserve and 1824 Limited Release – offers the ultimate flavour journey for whisky lovers and the expressions have guideline retail price ranging from 46 to 1,450 euros.

The 1824 Collection has been created by John Ramsay, Master Whisky Maker for parent company The Edrington Group, and Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan’s Whisky Maker; who between them have over 50 years of experience of making whisky. They have been inspired by the distillery’s long history and rich traditions to create a very special range of Single Malts. For John in particular, this is his legacy to the industry, being the last range he will develop before retiring next year.

The collection consists of four individual expressions which showcase the spectrum of flavour characteristics in any one range from The Macallan, the world’s most iconic whisky. Each expression tells a story about four of the defining elements of The Macallan family.

John Ramsay explains: “We set out to develop a cohesive family range that would further enhance The Macallan’s reputation for innovation.    We have identified and benchmarked an optimum flavour profile but because of the individuality of each cask, the age profile will change from bottling to bottling in order to meet this and ensure consistency of colour, nose and character. Each one of these exceptional products has a unique product point of difference which provides a distinctive taste experience to appeal to consumers around the world. The range represents the broadest flavour spectrum of Macallan that we have ever produced.

“As part of our new product development process the Collection has undergone rigorous consumer testing, performing outstandingly well again and again and giving us the confidence to launch a range of non-aged single malts from The Macallan distillery.”

The Macallan 1824 Collection will be available in Global Travel Retail from April 2009 with the 1824 limited release decanter on sale from October 2009.

The Macallan Select Oak (40%): Superior knowledge, crafting & investment in our casks.
We typically invest over 10 times more per cask then any other single malt. Can we prove this if asked? Each cask has been hand crafted & selected under the supervision of George Espie, The Macallan Master of Wood – this bottling being given an extra depth by first fill, sherry oak seasoned hogsheads.
RRP: 46 Euros (1 litre)

The Macallan Whisky Maker’s Edition (42.8%): Expertise of our Whisky Maker.
Individually crafted by The Macallan’s Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno – this is his personal bottling prepared to his preferred taste and strength of 42.8%. Containing rare whisky distilled from barley grown on The Macallan’s Estate. This whisky brings a distinctive heavier & ‘oilier’ texture to the final dram.
RRP: 69 Euros (1 litre)

The Macallan Estate Reserve (45.7%): Legacy of traditional methods of distillation.
Non-chilled filtered and bottled at the old- style 80’ proof  strength, more commonly known as ‘20 under’ in order to increase the flavour and deliver an extraordinary mouth feel. During its distillation and maturation, each bottling has been attended to by four generations of craftsmen, each patiently nurturing this whisky’s exceptional quality.
RRP: 165 Euros (70cl)

The Macallan 1824 Limited Release (48%): Rarity & quality of our older stock.
The 1824 Limited Release honours The Macallan’s founder, Alexander Reid, who was officially granted a licence to distil whisky in 1824.
One of only 1,824 decanters released each year, this Single Malt has been selected from some of the oldest and rarest casks at The Macallan’s Estate.  Each chosen cask had been marked as a future Fine & Rare bottling.
Drawing on so few and such individual casks, each year’s bottling will be subtly different. This first release is drawn exclusively from European oak solely grown, cared for & crafted by the Tevasa cooperage in Jerez, Spain.
These casks are sherry seasoned for a single-minded richness of character and darkness of colour.
RRP: 1450 Euros (70 cl)

Ardmore 25 yr. old, Travel Retail, Yum!

John Hansell

At WhiskyFest New York last week, a friend at the Ardmore table let me have a wee dram of an Ardmore 25 year old whisky that will be available at Travel Retail (formerly Duty Free), but not the U.S. He pulled out a small dram from his own private stash.

I really liked it!

It was at a higher strength (above 50%) and had a good dose of peat smoke combining with the oak and other Ardmore flavors. I didn’t take notes on it. All I remember was how good it was!

So, for all of you who ask me what to bring back when traveling overseas, here’s one to buy.
