Irish whiskey lovers: two rare Midleton single casks

John Hansell

Over the many years, I’ve often asked my friends at the Midleton Distillery (makers of the annual vintage release of Midleton Very Rare, Jameson, Redbreast, Power’s, Paddy, etc.) if they could bottle the Midleton Very Rare at a higher strength than 40% ABV. Well, they’re doing it now, but you are going to have work at getting a bottle. (Especially considering I’m a little late getting this information to you. Sorry about that.)

They have introduced two new single cask Midleton Very Rare whiskeys. One is available in Terminal 2 at the Dublin airport, while the other is available at Dublin’s Celtic Whiskey Shop.

A producer always takes a risk when introducing single cask whiskies (Highland Park and Glenfarclas come to mind), because each cask varies in flavor and might alienate  some enthusiasts. I think, in the long run,  we are all the better for it.

I hope we see more interesting releases from the Midleton Distillery–and with broader distribution. They have the potential to make so many great whiskeys (with so much variety). The more the merrier.

I don’t normally post up press releases, but I”ll do it here (along with a photo).

Post update: One thing I forgot to emphasize initially–and this is important: these two new Midleton whiskeys are Pure Pot Still whiskeys. They are not a blend of PPS whiskeys and grain whiskeys, like the standard annual Midleton release. So, in this regard, these new Midleton releases are a kin to Redbreast and Greenspot.

New Exclusive Single Pot Still Whiskey Releases from Midleton

Midleton is synonymous with its annual vintage releases of the exquisite Midleton Very Rare blend but the renowned Co. Cork Distillery has now added to its limited releases of Single Pot Still whiskeys under the Midleton brand name with two new expressions which have been launched this month.

Both whiskeys are Single Cask bottlings destined for two individual retailers – the new Irish Whiskey Collection shop at the recently opened Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport and for the Celtic Whiskey Shop on Dublin’s Dawson St.   The two casks were personally selected by Master Distiller, Barry Crockett, as outstanding expressions of the Midleton pot still style.

The Terminal 2 release is a 19 year old pot still whiskey which was laid down in November, 1991 in a first fill American bourbon barrel and has, in a new departure for the Midleton brand, been bottled at cask strength (53.7%).  The cask strength affords the whiskey connoisseur the rare opportunity to experience a Midleton pot still whiskey as it emerges directly from the cask.  The tasting notes for the whiskey reveal a dark, fleshy fruit character in perfect balance with the underlying pot still spiciness.   The impressive presentation box includes a portion of stave from the barrel in which the whiskey spent its life maturing so that on opening the box, one can literally smell the whiskey.  Only 200 bottles were yielded from this Single Cask.

The Celtic Whiskey Shop release was laid down in December, 1996, also in a first fill American bourbon barrel and has been bottled at 46%.  This is a slightly lighter style pot still distillate with green apples and banana to the fore.  270 bottles were realised from this particular cask.

Each bottle is individually numbered with the Terminal 2 expression retailing at €260 and the Celtic Whiskey Shop expression retailing at €225.

“Drinks by the Dram”: a great idea!

John Hansell

I’ve been wanting to mention these guys for a while now. I have no afilliation with them. I’m just mentioning it because I think it is a great idea.

If you don’t belong to a whisky club, and you aren’t near (or can’t afford) a whisky festival, how can you sample a whisky before you buy one? It’s difficult. And the last think you want to do is get stuck paying for an entire bottle of whisky you don’t like.

That’s why I like the “Drinks by the Dram” concept by UK retailer Master of Malt.  They sell 30 ml samples of whiskies at a reasonable price. You can see the list of whiskies they have available here, along with the prices.  Have a look.

Find a great whisky deal? Let us in on it.

John Hansell

I’ve noticed that the threads on various posts (like this one) regularly discuss where you found a whisky (rare or not) for a great price. Why don’t we start a thread where we can let our fellow WDJK readers know about a great deal.

Share your great finds with us so we can benefit too. (Retailers: please, no self-promoting.) What did you find, how much was it, and where did you get it?

Edinburgh retailer “betraying Scotland” by selling English whisky?

John Hansell

I don’t think so, but some people apparently do.

english-whisky-2Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh, Scotland, is going to sell the English Whisky Company’s “Chapter I” next month. The Deadline Press & Picture Agency reports here that some people think that such a move is “betraying Scotland.”

Have a look at the article. What do you think?

The second one is by Bonhams in Edinburgh on November 18th. This one features a rare Dalmore Oculus (pictured), along with the 3,000 plus bottle collection by deceased whisky enthusiast Willard S. Folsom. Details from their press release:

BONHAMS SELLS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST VALUABLE WHISKIES, THE DALMORE OCULUS, IN 18TH NOVEMBER WHISKY SALE

Bespoke bottling created to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of whisky auction sales

The Dalmore Oculus low resAs part of Bonhams Edinburgh’s highly-anticipated November 18th Whisky Sale, whisky enthusiasts will have the unique opportunity to purchase an exceptional one-of-a kind The Dalmore Oculus, amongst other distinguished whiskies.

This rare and unique Dalmore Oculus is one of the most precious whiskies to ever appear at auction. It is both the first and last of its kind, assembled from some of the most exceptional whiskies of the past 140 years and is thus estimated to sell for a staggering £15,000-20,000.

Due to its rarity and depth of stocks The Dalmore has long been recognised as a brilliant single malt. Jim Murray, whisky guru comments it is “one of the world’s greatest and undervalued distilleries”.

This particular unique expression of the Dalmore Oculus was created by master-distiller Richard Paterson, drawing on some four decades of experience. With his intimate knowledge of the stocks, Richard Paterson fused an incomparable and brilliant assemblage, beginning with a rich spicy and orange zest core from cask 1781 (distilled in 1951), trace elements of the taste and smell of dried fruits, ripe bananas, treacle toffee and almonds from an original fifty year old are added to develop complexity. Alongside these elements, rare malts selected from vintages distilled in 1868, 1878, 1922, 1926 and 1939 add a depth of flavour. Finally, to intensify the whisky, an incredibly intense oak, spice and bitter dark chocolate long matured distillate from cask 1782 is added to the mix alongside the whisky’s ‘capstone’: a judicious amount of the revered 64 year old, proffering notes of coffee, aromatic spices and citrus zest.

Such alchemistic artistry creates a peerless whisky fusion, which is beautifully presented in a precious Baccarat crystal decanter. This exceptionally crafted bespoke decanter is decorated with an intricate solid silver iconic stag standing alongside the name of this extraordinary whisky.

Richard Paterson, master distiller at The Dalmore said: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and The Dalmore Oculus is without doubt a truly exceptional expression. This is the most exquisite expression I have personally crafted with all the loving reference it so richly deserves to seduce the most discerning and sophisticated plates imaginable. I am confident it will appeal to epicureans, investors and collectors”.

Alongside the Dalmore Oculus, Bonhams will also be selling the first section of the largest single-owner collection of whisky ever to appear at auction. The 3,000-strong Willard S Folsom Collection of Old and Rare Single Malt Whiskies has been amassed over an 18-year period and features wide ranges of Ardbeg, Bowmore, Dalmore, Glenfiddich, Laphroaig, Springbank, Kinclaith, Killyloch, Ben Wyvis, Glen Grant, Glenmorangie, The Glenlivet, Strathmill, Mortlach and The Macallan.

Martin Green, Bonhams Whisky Specialist comments: “The 18th November Whisky sale is the most interesting to take place over a 20 year period and marks the 20th Anniversary of Whisky Auctions. The inclusion of the Dalmore Oculus is an exciting addition to this high quality sale. The Folsom Collection being sold in Edinburgh, Hong Kong and finally in New York in December makes this a very interesting and progressive year for Bonhams Whisky Sales”.

For Bonhams enquiries please call 0870 0273622

There are some pretty special whiskies in both collections.

Big whisky retailer news: Binny’s buys Sam’s

John Hansell

The two big Chicago retailers where enthusiasts have been buying whisky are Binny’s and Sam’s. Rumors have been floating around for a while that Binny’s was going to buy Sam’s. It’s now a done deal. The Chicago Tribune has the details here.

I remember shopping for whisky back in the early 1990s, and Sam’s was the place to buy whisky. That was  back when “Joe C.” was in charge of buying and selling the whiskies. Sam’s had the SELECTION and GOOD PRICES–and Joe C.’s friendly and knowledgeable guidance.

But Binny’s gradually gained the momentum. Joe C. left Sam’s and began working for Binny’s. It was like Sam’s didn’t even care anymore about being a place for specialty whiskies. This past decade, it was clear that Binny’s was now the new leader. If you wanted a rare whisky–at a good price–Binny’s was now the place to shop. Brett Pontoni was (and still is) the man carrying the whisky torch at Binny’s.

Why is this buy-out so important to you if you don’t live in Chicago? Well, these days you can order whisky just anywhere via the internet. Competition keeps prices in check. Binny’s and Sam’s have been in competition for a long time, and the prices and selection of whiskies in Chicago have always been great, largely because of this competition.

I would like to offer my congratulations to Binny’s. Well deserved! I just hope that this buy-out doesn’t affect whisky prices at Binny’s in the coming years.

Cool news for Four Roses bourbon fans

John Hansell

The Four Roses Distillery actually produces ten different styles of whiskey. They have two mash bills (one with 20% rye; the other with 35% rye). They also use five different yeast strains. So, that makes ten possible combinations.

Distillery Manager Jim Rutlede talked about it here during a guest blog  a while back. Jim uses these ten different styles to blend together (in combinations he feels are appropriate) to make the different bottlings of Four Roses bourbon.

Well, Jay Erisman, the Spirits Manager of The Party Source–and also the author of our Four Roses feature a while back in Malt Advocate–has convinced Four Roses to let him do something really cool. He’s going to do ten different single cask bottlings, using each posssible yeast strain and mash bill combination.

The first two of ten have already been bottled. You can find the details of Jay’s excellent adventure here on The Party Source’s blog. This should be a very interesting (and informative) project.

Review: Trader Joe’s Imperial 12 yr. old

John Hansell

Some of you have asked if I could review more “affordable” whiskies, and not just the special new releases. Here’s one. (Thanks Ron, for sending the sample.)

Trader Joe’s (Distilled at Imperial), 12 year old, 40%, $30
A whisky very typical from this distillery, which has been silent since 1998. Rich and thick on the nose and palate, oozing vanilla, ripe malt, cotton candy, powdered sugar, new mown hay, and lemon tart. Cinnamon, evergreen, and a wisp of smoke round out the palate. An evolving whisky—starts out heavy and sweet, then turns clingingly dry. A fun, rare whisky for a reasonable price.

Prestige Whisky: New online whisky shop

John Hansell

There’s a new online whisky shop. They even will ship to the U.S. (for a fee). I had a quick look at the site, and they have some whiskies already posted up, along with a few books. I didn’t really check out the prices and how competitive they are. I also have no involvement with them. I’m just passing along the information. If you want to have a look, the press release I received is below, along with the link to their site and blog.

Announcing an exciting new ‘recession proof’ web based business specialising in rare and exclusive whisky that wants to capitalise on its expertise in the rare and exclusive whisky sector.

After twelve months of painstaking market research, product sourcing and web development, Prestige Whisky is really proud to announce our official on-line launch with effect from 23rd of June 2009. We’re working in partnership with a mixture of massive whisky brand owners and smaller independent distilleries. All of our support partners are local British firms where possible. For example our delivery company is a small firm based in Elgin, chosen because of the service synergies they offer our business whilst maintaining the Scottish roots.

Despite the effects of the credit crunch, Prestige Whisky are excited about the prospects for our new website bringing the best in rare and exclusive whisky to our customers.

We want to cheer up the nation and feel our focus on whisky as an aspirational lifestyle choice will enable both the connoisseur and new convert to whisky to enjoy some really fine examples of the ‘water of life’.
With some really exciting bottles available from as little as thirty five pounds rising to several thousands of pounds we feel we have something in our range to suit everyone.

As well as simply retailing whisky we will also be providing advice and feedback to our customers both over the phone and via our up to the minute news service. We’ll also be launching special additional shopping and whisky sourcing/auction services during our first few months of trading.

Find out more details about our approach at our website at www.prestigewhisky.com  and our blog http://prestigewhisky.blogspot.com

We are an ambitious new United Kingdom based business founded in 2008 who feel that at a time of economic downturn it’s our duty to set up and grow a thriving business which is fun  and shows the ‘naysayers’ that Britain is not on it’s knees. In fact quite the contrary – At Prestige Whisky we believe that the British people know when to let their hair down and have a ‘wee dram’, whilst at the same time supporting the work ethic which drives Prestige Whisky forward. We’re also at pains to make sure our local communities benefit from our success and we’ll bear this in mind when we need to recruit pro-active and skilled people from within the UK.

We feel that although we are starting small this business has massive potential even as the credit crunch bites. People still need something to cheer them up and also to enjoy giving to friends and colleagues. With our unique ethos, custom designed website, exciting product range, expert knowledge and commitment to customer quality we view 2009 as a massively exciting time to be launching a new business.
