When I am going to post. And why.

John Hansell

When you have your own business, it’s so easy for it to consume all your free time if you let it. Even if you like what you do, I don’t think it is healthy. A very well known whisky writer recently told me that, in the past year, he has only taken two days off from work–including weekends.

Not me! I have a family. I have hobbies I love. So, here’s what I plan on doing. I am going to make an effort to post up something every weekday (and you know that I often have multiple posts in one day, like today). But, unless there is something really compelling, I don’t plan on putting up any blog posts over the weekend.

I just wanted to let you know my intentions and make you aware that if you visit WDJK on a Saturday or Sunday, you probably won’t find anything new. And if you check on a weekday, you probably will.

I have a lot of whisky reviews to share with you. I’ll try to put up a review every day next week.

A Whisky Blogging “Code of Ethics”?

John Hansell

I was thinking about this the past few days. The dozens of whisky blogs out there provide a great service to the whisky industry and to whisky enthusiasts. This is the main reason why they received Malt Advocate magazine’s “Pioneer of the Year” award.

But the downside to blogging (in general) is that it is essentially unsupervised. People can basically say whatever they want. I established brief etiquette guidelines on WDJK here  last year  which focused on comments. I wonder if something like this should be fleshed out, expanded, and (hopefully) adopted by all my fellow whisky bloggers?

Do you think this is a good idea? If we did try to create some sort of “Code of Ethics”, what do you think it should include?

I’m back

John Hansell

I’m back in the office and hitting the ground running. I’m testing a new blogging app for my Blackberry with this post, so I’ll keep this one brief given that I’m typing with my thumbs. Stay tuned…

One thing you can do while I’m away for a few days.

John Hansell

For those of you on Facebook, become a fan of Malt Advocate magazine. You can find the link here.

We’re just getting going, but we picked up 1,000 fans just in the past week. When I get back, I’ll be very active there too. Plus, you can post up your own thoughts on whatever (whisky related) topics you want and get a conversation going.

A few days R & R, a server upgrade, and then back at it with several new whisky reviews

John Hansell

All the awards have been announced. I hope you enjoyed my posting them up here on WDJK before they are published in the next issue of Malt Advocate (which will mail in about three weeks). The purpose of doing this was to allow for thoughtful discussion and interaction between whisky enthusiasts worldwide. I hope you enjoyed it.

I’ll be taking some time off with my family and won’t be posting anything new until Thursday. During this time, we’ll also be upgrading to a new, dedicated server. (Yes, WDJK has gotten so much activity, it has risen to the top of the list on its server as the site which is drawing the most bandwidth and memory. Unfortunately, it has also been slowed down because of this.) Someone from my office will put up a post the day we make the switch. You might experience some minor glitches that day. (Well, let’s hope they’re minor.)

In the meantime, click on the “What does everyone else know?” link on the right column of my blog and check out all those other wonderful whisky blogs, forums, podcasts, etc.

When I come back , I’ll be posting a bunch of new whisky reviews over the next several days, including: Glen Grant 10 & 16 yr. old, Smokehead, GlenDronach 12, 15, 18 yr. old, Glenrothes 1994 Vintage, a few new Signatory whiskies, and more. Stay tuned.

The 16th Annual Malt Advocate Whisky Awards: an overview

John Hansell

The Malt Advocate Whisky Awards exist to recognize excellence in the world of whisky. Now in their sixteenth year, these awards are the oldest and longest-running annual whisky awards program. They honor the world’s greatest whiskies and distilleries, and the individuals who make and promote them.

The only requirement: to be eligible for this year’s awards, products must have been sold in the U.S. during the 2009 calendar year. Please keep this in mind when reading about our award winners.

As I mentioned in a previous post, for the first time ever, we will be announcing our awards here, starting tomorrow, before they are eventually published in Malt Advocate magazine. You can read about the schedule of the awards, and our reasoning for publishing the awards via this blog, here. Each day, from February 1st-11th, I will post up the award at 0700 Eastern Time.

I would like to ask that, if you have any general questions about the contest itself, you use this posting to ask your questions. When I post up each award category and winner, let’s focus our comments on the actual whisky, distillery, etc., receiving the award.  Thanks.

Dave Broom: Malt Advocate’s new Scotch whisky columnist

John Hansell

Last year we were thrilled when Dave Broom agreed to start writing feature stories for us. He’s one of the best in the business.

I am proud to say that Dave has now agreed to write a Scotch whisky column in ever issue of Malt Advocate. His first column will appear in our Summer issue, which mails late May. (It’s too late to get him in our Spring issue, which  is already designed.)

If anybody knows what’s going on in Scotch whisky, Dave does. He’ll be our “eyes and ears” and report back with his insights and findings.

This Scotch whisky column, combined with Lew Bryson’s American whiskey column, means that we’ll have the two largest whisky markets thoroughly covered.

I can honestly say that we have the the finest group of writers we’ve every had since the inception of Malt Advocate 19 years ago.

The new blog design is up. Tell me about the glitches.

John Hansell

I’ll go over all the changes and enhancements with you soon. Right now I just want to know about the problems.

If you see that something isn’t working correctly, post up a comment here and we’ll look into it.

Thank you!

An administrative note

John Hansell

As I mentioned before, we’re in the process of revising the blog, preparing for video blog posts, and other fun things. Some of the “behind the scenes” activities will take place this week in preparation for this.

So, if anything strange happens this week (you don’t hear from me for a day or so, some of the functions go haywire, or something else unpredictable happens), you’ll know why.

I put up four posts today on a very cold and rainy Sunday here at the New Jersey shore (where we’re spending the weekend), so that should keep you going for a while.

Your recommendations for improvement?

John Hansell

I’d like your thoughts on ways to improve WDJK.

Before we get too far, let me say that, within a week or so, I will be going live with an enhanced blog design. Among other improvements, it will allow for embedded comments (meaning you can comment directly under someone else’s comment, regardless of where it is in the thread.) Videos are also in the works. When it goes live, you can give me your feedback on it.

But, right now, I am more interested in the content of this blog, rather than it’s design. What would you like to see more of? Less of?

At least one fellow blogger who we know and like said just today that we (WDJK) “can really be a buzz kill for those new to the world of whisky” and worries that it “does a disservice to fostering new relationships to Scotch whisky.”

How do you feel about this? Do you think this is true? Are we really deterring potential newbies from becoming Scotch whisky enthusiasts? If so, what should we do to correct this? (Dr. Whisky, your recommendations please?)

As always, your thoughts are greatly appreciated and can only make this blog better for all of us. Thank you!
