What’s the right thing to do when you have the entire set of the first release of Buffalo Trace’s Single Oak Project? Give away a 50ml set of all 12 bottles to a deserving individual.
I don’t want this to be a contest. I’m just feeling philanthropic. So, yesterday I installed a plug-in that tells me who’s commenting the most here on WDJK. I decided that’s who would get the set of samples.
I checked the comment list for both 2010 and 2011 year-to-date. It’s the same person: “Red_Arremer.” Congrats Red, and thanks for taking the time to participate here!

Yikes! I’m having trouble breathing the rarefied air up here! I’m humbled by this honor and promise to do my best to fulfill the lofty expectations posted thus far.
One caveat: I’m not a “fruit and flowers” kind of guy. That is, I’m not very good at telling you that there are lilies-of-the-valley on the nose, and notes of bosc pear and mango on the palate. When John says that he finds a certain aroma or flavor, I can generally pick it out, but that’s not how I approach a tasting on my own.
I tend to look for the mood of the whiskey instead, and use descriptors like bright or brooding, thin or thick, sweet or spicy, things like that. Pencil shavings and boat docks elude me. Plus, I’ve never done written descriptions before, so bear with me.

Sam – I’m sure you’ll do fine. But, let’s not see a review with “mixes well with Coke.” LOL
“The rich wood of sample #3 was very bold but simultaneously austere – clearly needing the lemon/lime kick of Sprite to loosen its tie a little bit. After adding a dash of Rose’s Lime juice, it was perfect: Dennis Rodman in a Bijan suit with the elbows cut out. Edgy with undeniably classy elements.”
Just kidding – congrats, guys. You’ll of course be graded on the quality and completeness of your tasting notes.

I admire your “sharing the spirit”. If I aquire bottles and wanted to share, what would you concider a minimum-maximum ratio? What do you pour when you are judging a whisky? With a 375 ml bottle, how many people could get a reasonable pour of how many ml/oz,to make a critical judgement of the whiskies?
I trust your expertise and would also welcome others suggestions.
I tried two bottles over the weekend, #3 and #99 and I have to tell you I was not impressed at all. In fact, I will say that #3 is one of the worst bourbons I have tasted. It is SO SWEET, like a caramel milkshake, that it was difficult to finish. The richness reminded me of eating a very rich dessert that you regretted after you had finished it. Very one dimensional, not really any layers of flavor. The #99 was a little better but not by much.
I usually love the Buffalo Trace bourbons and, honestly, I was shocked at how much I disliked these. I will not be buying any of these and feel they are significantly overpriced
