It looks like those old Springers from the 1960s (and 1970s) continue to escalate in price.
Chieftain’s (distilled at Springbank), 40 year old, 54%, $1,400
Aged in a first-fill sherry butt. Soft sherry notes, gentle toffee, golden raisin, green tea with honey, a peppering of spice (cinnamon, red and black licorice, candied ginger, hint of coconut macaroon and brine) and undertones of juicy oak (especially on the finish). Tame, somewhat seductive, and well-rounded. Not overly oaked, and I’m not finding any off notes. A lovely whisky, but not quite as dynamic as the “classic” Springbanks I’ve tasted from the 60s.
Advanced Malt Advocate magazine rating: 92

John,do you think it would have been better if it had been bottled 5-10 years ago?
Yes, this is very possible.
That will always be a risk to the bottler. Shall I do it now or wait a few years.
Sometimes it’s better to take a cask and bottle it sooner. But then, when was maturing a science

I will make my standard comment. 2009/2010 Springer 10..can’t beat it. In 30 years this will be the classic one that everyone talks about.
Hey Texas, the Pappy’s and BTAC are in town.
Thanks, JWC. I got a heads up from the store manager as well! Unfortunately I won’t be back in the Bayou City till Saturday. So save a few bottles for me! Thanks again!
Sorry to hijack the thread..JWC did you see the Pappy 15 year?
Texas, they have the ORVW 107 and Lot B out on the shelf (as it runs out, they bring out more – don’t know how much they have left). They had the 15 yo (in the cabinet), but this afternoon, none left (all the 20 yo’s also gone). Don’t know if they have more in the back. This year, they are saying one per customer. BTW, only $3 difference between Lot B and 15 yo.
Thanks! Apparently my wife has already gotten me something because when I told her the shipment was in and MAYBE she could pick me something up for Christmas..she said no comment!
I drank a half bottle of Black Adder Springbank 1966 once, best scotch I ever drank, didn’t know it was $1600..thanks Bill for not charging me lol
What no notes of Eucalyptus?
I really miss the last 21 year old, as well as the 12 year old from 1998 (and that’s not even including the legendary 12 year/ 100 proof version ). That was early in my SMS life, and I didn’t realize that they weren’t going to be around forever ;-(
