This was an easy one. These three whiskeys showed up on Friday, just in time. How could I not try them over the weekend? (Click on the photo for an enlarged image.)
Yes, that’s the new Maker’s Mark “46″ Bourbon, the new Four Roses “Limited Edition” Small Batch Bourbon, and the new WhistlePig Straight Rye (100%rye) whiskey.
All are very good whiskeys, hovering around the 90 rating. I already reviewed the Maker’s here. You’ll see the new Four Roses and WhistlePig reviews here very soon.
Oh, in case you were wondering, I also enjoyed other fine libations, including Lost Abbey “Carnevale” and Port Brewing “Summer Pale Ale” (both on tap), along with a Palmer “Alter Ego” 2000 Bordeaux.

I am really curious about that Whistlepig, luckily a friend is bringing me a bottle when he visits the Netherlands this summer.
I didn’t really celebrate July 4th, but I did have some nice bourbons (great coincidence!): George T. Stagg is still a real stunner. So much flavor, and SOOOO much alcohol…
That WhistlePig is a curiosity, for sure. Any idea how much of that rye is malted, and from where this whiskey was sourced? Hope this shows up at WFNY!
More about the Whistlepig here, apparently is Canadian, so it should have been drunk 3 days before the 4th, or just to be sure on both days

Yes, the back label says it’s imported from Canada. And don’t worry, I think I enjoyed it on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd AND 4th.
And on the 5th too! But who’s counting?
is whistle pig available? how much is retail?
It is available at the suggested retail price of $69.99 for a 750ml bottle in California, Illinois, New York and other select markets according to a press release I received.
I haven’t seen it in California yet.
Doesn’t show on the Binny’s site either as “whistlepig” “whistle pig” or in the list of ryes. Guy on phone said he heard it was “in the pipeline someplace.”
WhistlePig also just went on sale online at DrinkUpNY.com. Not sure if they can ship to every state, but I think they hit most of them.
Just a few comments:
First, all of the rye is unmalted. We wanted to showcase the taste of the unmalted rye… without any complications …. unadulterated. No corn, no malt, nothing else …pure, unmalted rye.
Second, we are still in launch phase for WhistlePig. it is already at select establishments in NYC… and is on the way to Chicago now. The Launch for San Francisco, et al. is planned for the first week of August.
If you ae in CA,IL, or NY … just ask your favorite watering hole .. they can get it through Domaine Select… otherwise, DrinkUp NY.com is a good place to start.
California, hare I come …..
Thanks Dave.
Dave, if the rye is all unmalted, what provides the necessary enzymes? I find this concept to be very intriguing, being a big fan of unmalted rye in high proportions.
Traditionally, Monongahela Rye used no corn, either (but did use some barley malt), which makes for a very distinctive and appealing flavor profile
Dave – Are you doing any events for the launch in SF? Would love to attend… Thanks.
WhistlePig rye will be available in NY, CA and IL through Domain Select. As Dave says DrinkUpNY.com is great place. If you’re a retailer or on-premise, please contact me at ykato@whistlepigwhiskey.com.
Any change in taste between the bottled Maker’s 46 and the final sample you tried?
Close enough to not change my notes or score.
really looking forward to trying it – just picked up three bottles at Binnys.
“… and the new WhistlePig Straight Rye (100%rye) whiskey….”
I am very much looking forward to trying it on my next visit to Chicago (as it is not available in MI).
What other ryes are produced in the U.S. with a 100% rye mashbill?
Thanks,
Shell
