In an effort to get to know you better, I was wondering about your drinking habits. This is not some marketing research question or anything else like that, but just an honest query.
How many times a week do you drink whisky? And when you do have a whisky, how many drinks do you have?
And what do you drink most? Whisky, or something else?
To get the ball rolling here, I’ll tell you about me. I drink whisky more days than I don’t. Most of the time my whisky drinking is work-related–to taste or review whiskies for WDJK and Malt Advocate magazine, primarily because I have so many review samples that come in. That’s fine with me. One of the most exciting things for me is to try a new whisky.
Actually, I drink more beer than any other category. It is so versatile. Perhaps, in this manner, I am a bit like my mentor Michael Jackson was. I started out as a beer writer first, and then I moved on to whisky. I love wine too, as well as the other distilled spirits categories.
My typical day might be to review a a couple of whiskies during the day. (Not every day, but certainly a few days out of the week.) Then, depending on what our family is eating, I will have a glass of beer or wine with dinner. Whether I have something else to drink after dinner, like a whisky, depends on my mood and the circumstances.
For the most part, I’m a 1-2 drinks a day kind of a guy. But I do drink most days. Why? Because it is something I look forward to. I really enjoy it.
How about you?

I, too, look forward to a dram or two several times a week. Don’t do it every day…but 3-4 nights a week, including weekends, is normal. Usually it’s in one of my WhiskyFest New York nosing glasses, and never more than two an evening. With dinner? Usually beer or water…but I find I drink Scotch much more in the winter (the heavier the peat the better!) than I do in the summer.
My drinking habits tend to shift a lot the last couple of months.
I recently moved from one end of The Netherlands to the other, so my bottles were in boxes for a couple of weeks in which I mostly drank beer. After that I felt I had to catch up and I drank whisky on almost all nights of the week.
I tend to like lots of drinks, from beer and wine to other distillates, but my favorite drink is whisk(e)y. I have been cutting down on drinking, since I tend to sleep a lot better when I didn’t have any alcohol on the night before. I drink whisky on about 4 nights per week, I guess.
When I drink whisky I always drink it neat. I never add ice, and only add a drop of water when I am at a ‘formal’ tasting.
I am also a 2 drinks kind of guy, except when I really can find the time to sit down and create a little line of bottles for myself. I almost never exceed four drinks at home, unless there is a special occasion.
Here’s my rotation system:
Week 1: Bourbon, Irish whiskey, and miscellaneous (rum, beer, brandy, or whatever else might be around the house). This is the “no Scotch” week.
Week 2: Less expensive Scotch whisky. For me this means a blend or two but mostly 10 or 12 year-old single malts. Typically $40 / bottle or less.
Week 3: More expensive Scotch whisky.
Number of drinks for each day:
Sunday: 3-4
Monday: 0
Tuesday: 0
Wednesday: 0
Thursday: 0
Friday: 2-3
Saturday: 4-5
That’s interesting, Jacob. A rotation system. I guess I’m not that organized.
I drink beer or wine every night. Usually I tend to drink more wine, but with only my wife working while I finish my last semester of law school, I have been buying more beer to drink now, while holding out on bottles I have aging- though I still have a good amount of “drink now” wines in my cellar. I try to have some form of whisk(e)y at least two to three times a week (or other spirits), but it really depends on what time I have to get up in the morning. I am an avid cyclist, and usually have to ride early in the morning before my classes for school start. That said, this week is spring break for me, and with not much going on, besides catching up on work and getting more miles in, I intend to have a few more glasses of everything during the week- especially something delicious while watching NCAA. Go Badgers!
I tend to drink whisky almost daily (I say almost, as there are days when I abstain entirely or will drink something other than whisky). The number of drinks depends more on whim than on any set, decisive process. 1-2. Sometimes as many as 3 drinks. But that’s rare.
I usually have just about an ounce of neat whisky maybe 3 weeknights per week. (I love all types of whisk(e)y, the more the better). On weekends I’ll usually make myself a few classic whiskey cocktails, which I’m getting more and more into. I do like beer, but I only drink it when I’m out…
My drinking is fairly set through the week. Tuesdays and Fridays I am a Pub Crawl leader. I have a job taking tourists to bars and drinking with them—yes, that’s a real job. I consume 2 to 3 drinks wile “working”.
Thursday night is scotch night. I drink with an online group known as the Plowed Society. I usually have between 3 and 6 drams that are comprised of middle to high end scotches—always Islays.
I sometimes have a dram on Saturday; however, most of my drinking happens either at work or during the work week. On that rare occurrence I have company then all bets are off. It could be an epic drinking event.
I usually drink one dram a day, usually later when the kids are sleeping, and there is quiet in the house. On fridays or saturdays when i am home, i also take a wee dram before napping (if i get a chance to nap) when the house is quiet.
I need to be relaxed to have my dram.
I also have quite a lot of tasting samples (not like you John) but the recent weeks i did swap a lot with fellow whisky amigos.
Since i live in Israel which is a very hot country (winters are like summers in Europe here) , i find it very hard to drink whisky most of the summer. So, my winter consumption is much greater at winters.
In the summer season i mainly drink beers , with an odd dram here and there during the week… Weekends i try to sample more.
If i am in the mood for more than one type of whisky per day, then i sip smaller amounts.
John,
I’d say I’m a lot like you in moving freely between whisky, beer, and wine, consuming roughly one to three drinks a day. Currently working through some Victory Brewing (Pennsylvania!) products which are just awesome.
My go to drink is a single generous pour of George Dickel 12 with lots of ice. I probably have this two or three times a week. I always have a 1.75 of Dickel 12 on hand. Makers on the rocks fills a similar role when I find a good deal on a 1.75.
When friends are over, I break out something a litte more expensive. BT Antique collection when I have it, or some of my better Scotch or Irish. My wife’s go to is the Rusty Nail so we always have a 1.75 of Dewars available. A good friend of mine is gin martini drinker and I’m always more than happy to join him. I like a dry one with a splash of olive juice.
I like to make whiskey cocktails as well. For me there’s nothing better than a great Manhattan made with Rittenhouse or Sazerac and Fee Brother’s barrel aged bitters. Whiskey sours (also made with Rittenhouse) are popular with the ladies.
I’m about as disorganized about it as Jacob is organized. I often drink something repeatedly until I’m tired of it, and then switch to something else. Maybe 4-5 nights a week, I’ll have a glass. I don’t often drink anything else. The occasional cocktail or beer, but not frequently.
Everyone,
I’m like most of you. I vary on what I drink. It really depends on my mood (and the time of year). I work nights so my time of day is a bit off for most. A beer when I get home in the morning is the usual. If I have the house to myself it’s always whisk(e)y. Neat, almost always neat. Bourbon (I make my rounds on brands) more times than not. But if the wife is going to be late it will be something with heavy peat (she’s not a fan of the peat , to drink or to smell, lol). Work days, only one to two drinks a day. My days off can find me working my way through a particular “genre”. I try not to do that very often. But I admit, I am weak, and I sometimes life is just too good
And while I’m confessing things, I might as well come clean on something. I love bourbon and I love scotch. And I freely admit that to all and say it often. But to be completely honest my favorite for the past 20 years is, without question, RYE. There, I said it. And I don’t care who knows!
Right on!
lately at night I have 1-2 pours (relatively small pours) of single malts often followed by a beer.
I spent most of my adult life as a dedicated beer drinker, with a little bit of wine thrown in with a nice meal. I loved trying all sorts of micro brews and different styles. I would go heavy in the winter (porters, stouts, ales, barley wines, etc.) and then in the warmer weather I would lighten it up with pale ales, lagers, wheat beers, etc. I was completely into beer and never drank whiskey.
And then about 8 years ago I tried some scotch. I think Dalmore was the first thing I ever bought. I don’t even remember why I bought it in the first place. But, I developed a taste, did a little reading and slowly expanded my horizons. Now I am almost exclusively a whiskey drinker. Although in the summer I do revert back to beer as my outdoor pour. ?
I have become obsessed with learning and reading and trying whiskey. I would have to categorize myself as a bourbon drinker primarily. But, I would never say no to a dram of Scotch or Irish (or Canadian or anything else for that matter).
As far as my drinking habits, I usually will have a drink on Thursday through Sunday. Thursday and Sunday are one drink. Fri and Sat could be as many as 3. I vary what I drink, even on the nights that I have 2 or 3 I may pour 3 different bottles.
And if the week is going roughly, I may treat myself to a glass of whiskey on a Monday Tuesday or Wednesday for that matter. Nothing better than a sip of whiskey to ease the problems of the world.
I’m 26 years young. I started drinking at age 21.
these days I drink probably 3-5 days a week but some times as much as 7. Recently I have been more into spirits but I also drink a lot of beer. Having a good friend that is a distributor helps. I like craft beer but I also drink swill (old mill, PBR, MGD, schlitz)
as far as spirits goes it all whiskey. most of what I drink is $20-40 a bottle. Half of my bottles are $40-100 but I try and keep them around longer. I may pour myself a really small dram of them and then move on to the cheaper stuff. I frequently will start drinking at lunch that way I can have several slowly throughout the day without getting too effected. Also I like to drink a little when I am in my office. I liek to have something really powerful like taliisker, lagavulin, or ardbeg so I can have a sip and get a real big flavor in my mouth that will last for 15 minutes.
When I pour myself a dram I generally make it about half as much as a normal person would. When I drink I will have 1-7 of these half drams.
When it comes to good whisky, it’s all about free time and good company. Some days I have them some days I don’t. Many days I hardly even look at my better scotches. I don’t rush it with the really good stuff and that means I probably don’t drink it more than 3 times a week.
Most days I start with a glass of good bourbon, scotch, or rum priced under 70$ and later move on to a g&t. The variety in the profile of premuim gins keeps getting better and better. Right now, my gin of choice is Ethereal from Berkshire Distillery. They change the color of the label and the recipe (fairly dramatically) with each batch. It’s always very flavorful and, surprisingly, the new batch gets cloudy when I add my Schwepps– pretty nice.
I’m gonna sound like an alcoholic-in-training, but how much I’m drinking is directly proportional to how crappy my day at work was and inversely proportional to how much of a hangover I had the night before. That’s a disgruntled engineer for you. I drink anywhere from 2-7 days a week, so it’s all pretty sporadic, and I have somewhere from 1-5 drinks a night when I do. I pretty much drink two things: scotch or Keystone Light with lime. Classy, right? As for scotch, I tend to drink whichever open bottle I have a lot of. The reason being, if I empty a bottle, I’ll feel that desire to buy and open another to replace it. I figure, I should probably be saving my money for other, more important things. In a given night, I’ll bounce around between the bottles. I always drinking with a hint of water; see, I’m still not such an alcoholic that 43%+ doesn’t burn a little on the way down …
2-3 times a week, most of times 4-6 Drams of Single Malt (Scotch or Japanese). Since I had to give up beer (Diabetis) I drink only whisky. I don’t know why, but it doesn’t affecte bad to me (bloody lucky
I too drink more beer than whisky or wine. Probably because it goes better with food and the whisky I chose to drink is more expensive than most wines I drink. When I do have a glass (or two), it is most often different bottles. I enjoy tasting new whisky and always look over the selection before making my choice. At home, on the rare occasion I do pour a measure, I have several choices and enjoy taking my time opening several bottles to smell the different aromas before making my pick. At the office, I keep two or three bottles for special occasions or guests. Current selection is Edradour Maderia Finish Straight Cask Aged 11 years bottle #10 of 301 and Signatory Littlemill 1990 Aged 16 Years in Hogshead bottle #16 of 333. Both are close to being finished so the quest is on to find suitable replacements. I love a challenge!
I tend to go through phases and will go through long stretches of enjoying only beer, wine, or scotch. These days its mostly scotch except when I make pizza, in which case a nice beer compliments it better. I usually don’t drink with dinner, but wait until after my wife and baby have fallen asleep, which is usually around the same time and early. I have about an ounce in a glencairn glass at least 5 days a week. Sometime more, but rarely more than 3 drinks in a night — my tastebuds stop working after 2 drams or so. I’m a lightweight, what can I say. Also, i used to keep a single bottle on hand, but now I enjoy a little variety and have 6 bottles (mostly Islay whiskies). I do look forward to it at the end of (almost) every evening. Something about the flavors and aromas that are luxurious, maybe nostalgic, and just special.
On average, I have 1-2 pours 5 nights a week. Generally after 8 as I read or watch tv. I enjoy beer, wine, and other spirits, but don’t drink them very often. If I’m going to have one drink, its going to be a whiskey more times than not. I have 5 or so bottles of whiskey open at any given time and pick what I’m feeling that night.
My drinking is almost always in the company of friends. When I drink alone, it will typically be a slowly sipped dram, a Cognac or, if mixing, a g&t (Junipero, Plymouth or Broker’s, usually), a brandy & soda (Hardy, usually) or in warmer months rhum agricole in various ways. In that situation 1-2 is the standard. With meals, pinot noir or Spanish reds are the the preference. We don’t do that every day, though.
In the company of friends, beer enters the picture. German beer, usually a pils but we follow the freshest kegs. I usually drink from .3 glasses and don’t count. Sessions run from about 4-6.30 and when they’re good, they are very good, with the conversation carrying us along at least as much as the beer. Things can happen here. Junipero martinis can happen, or shots of Kabanes or various German brandies. Most often, though, we stick with the beer.
Alternatively, there’s the pub. That’s always for the company. Well-poured Guinness and tumblers of either Red Breast or Black Bush (or Powers, if the mood is right) are the accompaniments. 3-6 drinks and I’m off home. Well, things can happen, but usually…
Something of the above (rarely a combo!) happens3-5 times a week. There are days of rest, but they hardly ever happen on a Sunday.
Most weekdays find me coming home from work and immediately pouring myself a single drink of something inexpensive (a glass of Old Fitzgerald-neat, an Old Overholt manhattan, a simpler times lager). For some reason though, on nights I have trouble sleeping (maybe once or twice a week) that’s when I’ll grab a Glen Cairne glass and do a serious tasting. It’s a comforting ritual, and I’m focused, tense, and bored, which seems to be the perfect combination for my palate. That’s when I reach for the good stuff and jot down a few tasting notes, 2 AM seems to be the right time, for whatever reason, for me to really appreciate a good whiskey.
I usually drink a few times a week, but it’s mostly work related. I enjoy whisky of a very superficial level and tend not to think too much about it. When home, I enjoy a nice aged rum with a cigar on the balcony. I consider myself more of a cigar smoker than I do a drinker.
John, when you taste for work, do you spit? I’ve always assumed whisky writers have to mostly spit to keep a clear head with all of that tasting.
Sku, I don’t want to get off topic here. We discussed tasting in a previous thread here. Have a look.
I run every other day mostly and try to avoid any alcohol during those days as you can really feel it hinder your performance, especially if you’re going six+ miles. But during my odd days I’ll typically have 2-3 drams. I’ll have anywhere from 5 to 8 bottles open at one time and try to drink them evenly. When one gets to the quarter fill mark I’ll go for the kill but only at the same rate of 2-3 drams on those odd days until it’s gone. At that point I’ll re-access all the open bottle fill marks and contemplate if opening another type of bottle is a good idea. If not, I’ll rinse and repeat until I kill another bottle.
I do enjoy good beer very much but only treat myself every so often because I don’t want my beer gut to come back. In some cases 3 drams of whiskey is equivalent to a bomber of beer, sometimes far less.
Usually anything Lagunitas (just opened a hops stoopid last night an loved the floral hop notes), a bomber of Racer 5, Rogue Shakespeare, Victory brewing or anything along those lines. I do own a lot of wine but tend to only open a bottle when I’m itching to try a potentially great inexpensive bottle or when I get together with family. For that reason I have a lot of age-able varieties with most bottles in or near their prime. Tonight I’m going to Mom’s for Corned Beef so I’m bringing a bottle of Lolonis ’02 Winemakers Cab and a bottle of Olivet Lane ’07 Pinot Noir (John, do try this bottle). Other bottles will be cheaper Zinfandels, Good Malbecs, and reds that don’t sit as long and that are opened on the fly if I want to finish a bottle over the course of two days. My wife doesn’t drink so it’s hard to justify opening a good bottle.
I don’t have a regular schedule. Most weekends I have some to drink and most weeks I drink a couple of evenings during the week.
When I drink, it is usually beer (always a microbrew of some kind if I don’t have homebrew that’s ready) with dinner, whiskey or scotch after dinner and mostly beer when I get together with friends as it’s always easier and cheaper to bring a six pack of beers and leave a couple behind than to do with good whiskey.
I rarely have more than a couple of beers or drams when at home and always make a point of using the proper glass (english pint glasses for most UK or american styles, 1/2 Liter or full Liters for german styles or stem goblets for belgian style beers, glencairn nosing glasses for whiskeys) if it is available.
When going out, I only drink alcohol I find interesting and frequently pick water over regular or mass-produced beers and spirits.
I do like wine and other spirits though I haven’t spent much time with them. I try to make a point of having the drink that best fits the restaurant (if it’s known for its wine selection, I’ll chose wine; if it’s mexican, I’ll chose mexican beer or tequila, sake or Suntori with sushi, etc).
I drink 3-5 nights a week and anywhere from 1-5 drinks per night. I really like to set up flights when I drink (Diageo Distillers Editions, or Islay 10-12yo’s or 30+yo speysiders, etc), though sometimes it is fun to travel the whisk(e)y world and in one night have a bouron, japanese, scotch etc. Mostly I drink whisk(e)y though occasionally I will have beer or wine.
John, I looked back at the original question and realized I got off topic, writing about drinking habits instead of whisky drinking habits. Apologies, but the thread made me nostalgic for, well, day before yesterday I guess.
My blends are Famous Grouse and Black Bottle. In winter, I’ll have Black Bottle with a bit of boiling water (just enough to warm the whole), which goes back to the first time I heard an old man order whisky in a pub, in York. I’ll also put BB in a cup of strong tea with a splash of milk, which I like much better than Irish coffee.
For single malts, the open bottles cover the range of regions. Choice of bottle depends on mood, company (or not, depending on whether I’m with people or just the dram) and probably ‘x’ factors I can’t track. Always, Highland Park, Ardbeg and some good Speyside are in the mix. Other bottles now open are a Sig NCF ’92 Bowmore, a Sig CS ’92 Mortlach (not as fine as the ’89), The Macallan CS (litre, from Heathrow), Ardmore Trad (which I quite like) and three SMWS bottles. I choose amongst these according to the post above, 1-2, a few times a week. For me, having a dram is almost like a “centering” exercise; it slows me down and reminds me of the good things.
…I begin Friday afternoon before the Sabbath and suppliment with beer and dark chocolate till sundown Saturday….’on we go’….
Forgot to add that I’ll usually pour a measure of good Tequilla every once in awhile. I usually have a good bottle of Reposado or Anejo on hand. Right now I’ve been enjoying Grande Centenario Anejo and Casa Noble Organic Anejo. Also have a bottle of Tres Generaciones Reposado but it’s a little rough around the edges for buying again.
For starters, I have far more whiskey than I will drink in a lifetime. What I most enjoy is sharing a good bourbon or other whiskey with friends over an evening conversation or dinner. At home I have maybe 3-4 pours a week and those consist of one or maybe two 1-1.5 oz pours. I primarily drink bourbon but do rotate scotch and irish into my drinking. As a father of two, I have to exhibit responsible drinking and not overindulge which I have never done. There are times where I go weeks without having anything to drink and those times allow me to cleanse the system and start over.
I mostly drink single malts at home, most every night I happen to be home, though in the summer months it’s more often beer, and as of last summer or good tequila for sipping neat. (I like Herradura reposado. I’d like to try some others this summer–recommendations?) Don’t care for other hard liquors. I may have 2-3 pours a night, but they’re fairly conservative and more about sampling (though I find that the more I have open the more I’m tempted to drink). Beer at bars (hard to pay bar prices for single malts when I have them at home); beer or wine at restaurants. I’m a lightweight, so am somewhat self-protected against excess.
Notice a lot of folks mention tequila in their comments. I too will occasionally sub a good tequila for single malt. Favs are Don Julio Reposado and Anejo on non-special occasions, and Herradura Seleccion Suprema on special occasions.
Also will sometimes have a vodka drink (Ketel One). I’m a single malt collector, so have lots of sealed bottles. But have open Clynelish 14, Cragganmore 12, several Ardbegs and the venerable Lagavulin 16. Will have some kind of drink (or two) pretty much every evening before, during or after dinner.
From Monday through Wednesday I have two drams of bourbon a night. I will always have different bourbons because I love to compare and contrast the flavors. On Thursday I have two beers. On Friday and Saturday I usually drink wine. On Sunday I take a day off.
I absolutely love whiskey, wine, and beer. I often dream of a product that is 100% equivalent minus the mind/body altering affects so that I would be free to drink as much as I truly wish. Until then I (along with help from my wife) try to make sure I take at least 2 days off per week and will sometimes go an entire week without a drink just to keep things in check. Not that I really think I’m in danger, but I have both a cousin and a friend who were alcoholics.
My wine consumption is almost always food based. I average about 2 generous pours 1 day a week.
I drink beer for a wide variety of reasons. Food based, parties, at the bar, enjoying the outdoors, or if 3 drams of bourbon hasn’t quenched my thirst. I end up drinking it anywhere from 1-4 days a week.
As for whiskey, I drink it because I love it. Not for any other reason. In the winter I drink bourbon 2-3 days a week and in the summer 1-2 days. I’m almost never able to stop at just 1 dram; but I try not to have more than 3 drams on a given night. The first comes from the top shelf. The second may or may not come from the top shelf, but if there is a third I’ll definitely switch to whatever’s in the decanter. Incidentally the decanter currently holds Evan Williams Single Barrel 2000 so there isn’t much drop off in quality but the price allows it which is great.
I have a whisky nearly every night. Sometimes two, rarely three, very rarely more than that. I just have a few bottles but I try to have something for every mood (a variety of single malts, a blend or two and bourbon), and I rotate. It really depends on the day, and how much attention I want to give to what I’m drinking. I don’t drink much beer, especially in the winter, but I have one now and then. I don’t drink wine much either anymore, especially since I discovered single malts… I just enjoy them that much. Two 1.5 ounce pours is usually just right, and I find it a great way to unwind with my family (my wife usually has a glass or two of wine with me). Sometimes my four-year-old son will join us for a nightcap (he drinks milk, though).
As the weather gets warmer I’ll probably have more vodka/rocks or vodka cokes. Again, it’s about mood. Quantity is the same. 1 or 2, 3 rarely.
I drink more nights than not. Ususally 1-2 drinks per night. Now that I actually think about it, I probably split my consumption evenly between whisky(bourbon or scotch) and beer. I keep, on average, 4 bottles of whisky open, no 1 particular style. I always have a six pack of some sort in the fridge, either craft or homebrew, usually something hoppy. Sometimes I go malty in the colder months, but if I’m feeling something sweet, it’s probably going to be whisky.
I drink……….whenever it suits me. I’m on the late shift now and while checking mail and facebook i have a few whiskies (bourbon or scotch). No booze during a week of nightshifts, Sometimes during cooking 1 or 2 and the rest of the evening coffee and some wine. Sometimes portwine, sometimes rum ; Had some belgian beer last week while watching a few dvd’s. So , i drink almost everyday but i never know in advance what i’ll be having.
I mostly drink scotch – thus the email handle. I look forward to a good single malt, and I have one 2 times a week, but probably less in the summer and more in the winter.
I have about 7 brands on the go at any one time, and I match the drink to mood, temperature and precipitating event if there is one.
Talisker was an excellent beverage for celebrating our Canadian hockey gold medal, for example…
two drinks per normal evening usually, and most days that’s two single malts (2 ounces per drink). i’ll usually have one before dinner (highland park 12 as i type tonight) and one after dinner (this is generally when i drink my speysides). i used to drink a lot more beer than i do now, but with a baby in the house fridge space is at a premium. i will also mix cocktails every once in a while, though i’m more likely to do this when we have company. at bars i’ll drink more but never more than 2 drinks when drinking alone.
I drink 1-2 times per week; more reduces my quality of sleep. I don’t pre-limit, just stop when I feel done, anywhere from 1 to 5 drinks; average 2-3. My favorites are Cognac, Champagne, and sake, but I enjoy excellence and variety more. Which is why I like this blog. I don’t collect, unless you count my last $50 bottle of The Macallan 18 1979 that I can’t bring myself to open. My present open whisky inventory consists of Lagavulin, The MacPhail’s Collection (ok, not open, waiting for me at my sister’s, thanks a lot John), Redbreast, Old Potrero, Evan Williams Single Barrel 2000 (barrel 129), and some dregs of Booker’s I’m holding for comparison. And I think the idea of paying for a vodka that had travel by cargo ship, unless it’s got some serious historical significance, is utterly ridiculous.
Well with me being gone from home 1-3 months at a time, twice a year, I have two different schedules. When I am at home, my wife and I enjoy 2 drams of single malt a night on Thu, Fri, and Saturday. Sometimes Saturday becomes a beer and bourbon night.
Not surprisingly consumption goes up when I am on travel as I am now. What I drink depends..Selection is limited here in Alice Springs as it is in parts of the U.S. I go to, selection is non-existent in Antarctica unless you bring your own down (while we can still do that), Sweden..the Systembolaget is great! In general though, it’s 3-4 drinks everynight, there is likely a 5-6 drink night in there a couple of times per trip. Single malts in Sweden, mostly beer and bourbon (I love the fact the Wild Turkey is so ubiquitous) elsewhere. I am aware that those amounts likely need to be cut back. Problem is it tastes too darn good.
Hi from Scotland!
I drink mostly single malt Scotch whisky – Our group here meet every Tuesday at the Dundee Dell and taste four or five – Tuesday at the Dell is dram for the price of a peg so we tend to scour the scotch menue for things that are interesting and that we afford – then we split dram by # at the table (e.g. if there are four we get two drams split four ways) –
Rest of the week just depends on events and activities – Mostly when not drinking scotch I drink Beer since that is my son’s favorite past time!
I love the taste of liquor.
If I could, I would drink every day/night. Lately, 2 – 4 times per week. 1 – 4 drinks per session. More per session on special occassions like Super Bowl, rock concerts, wife not looking, etc…
Mostly whiskies but also craft beers, Tequila (blancos), Gin-Vodka-liqueur’s when playing mixologist, wine here and there. Like food, I continue to explore more and more every year from around the world.
Waiting for the day, oh, maybe 20 years or so from now, as medical science evolves, when I can go to Wal-Mart and purchase a new liver off the shelf. You can’t stop progress.
At one point, it was 1-2 drams a night (where one dram is about one shot… in a nice whisky glass of course). However, I’ve found that — even in small amounts such as 1 or 2 drinks — alcohol seems to really affect mood the next day. It ended up being really important to make sure I got a good night’s sleep, with perhaps an extra hour due to the fact that sleep just isn’t the same after drinking.
Anybody else notice this?
One or two 1.5 oz pours a night. Neat at room temp. in a Glencairn or pinched top rocks glass. Usually Bourbon but dark aged Rum in the hottest summer months or when I’m at the coast mucking about in boats.
Almost never make cocktails at home and rarely order one at Bars. When I do it is usually a Manhattan or a Rum and Ginger.
In the past year I have been pouring Armagnac, Cognac or high end American Brandy more frequently after dinner with Armagnac and Germain Robin Brandy becoming favorites.
I usually have one drink a night except for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays which usually means two drinks. I have whiskey about 85% of the time (generally Scotch or Bourbon). On the nights where I’m not having whiskey, it varies quite a bit between porters, stouts, pale ales, red wines, rum, tequila on the rocks, or one of my special occasion drinks, Absinthe!!! (Mansinthe is my favorite, if you’re curious and don’t mind the celebrity influence, really amazing stuff)
1 or 2 a night. Mostly Scotch, but bourbon is also possible.
Depending on the mood, I have a Islay or another region.
I always have Johnny Drum Private Stock 15 yo on the shelves, so when the mood bends to bourbon, that is what I will have. Occasionally I buy a bottle of Maker’s Mark.
Once or twice a week. Usually with dinner or as an after dinner drink.
A typical week: 1-2 drams on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, sometime more if I get together with friends. Usually no whisky on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (workout days). Split evenly between Scotch and Bourbon, although recently I’ve been drinking more Bourbon. Pours are generally 1.5 oz, neat in a Glencairn glass.
I try not to drink on consecutive days, especially if the first day involved wine or beer.
I’m more inclined to overindulge in wine or beer than whiskey, which I savour.
If I’ve had a couple of whiskeys the day before, and I don’t feel any ill effects, I’ll likely do the same tonight.
But if I had a bottle of wine with dinner, or a few pints in the pub with friends, I’m more likely to abstain for a day or two.
Probably have a single dram 3-4 nights a week. Used to do more beer but now find a glass or two of wine with dinner a few times a week instead. Probably 5-6 drinks a week…but no system and not counting!
I probably enjoy a dram or two 4-5 times a week. I often have a glass of wine with dinner, and maybe a beer or two later in the evening. I do my best to encourage variety in my beer, wine, and whisky diet, and always buy from micro-breweries and local wineries when possible. While I have my “favourites,” I’ll always buy something I’ve never tried before rather than something I have.
I’ll have a beer or glass of wine with dinner, but I tend to drink a bourbon or scotch on any night when I’ve got an hour to relax before bed. To make my decision easier, I drink scotch if it rained, bourbon if not; simple, but a handy rubric. Irish when the mood takes me!
I love Kentucky Bourbon. And the occassional merlot. Hope this doesn’t sound too drastic, but I usually drink every night after work and it takes 1/2 pint of Bourbon to give me that nice relaxed feeling.
I’m never drunk. Never. Hate drunkeness. Love Bourbon. Cheers!
I drink whiskey every weekend. Sometimes between my husband and I we drink a fifth to 2 fifths or sometimes theres friends to help with the fifths……….My question is….How much will this age me in appearance and I am wondering if this is a healthy habit or if we shld cut back??????
I like to sip a little bourbon every night on the front porch before bedtime.
